Nutrition / Formulation Overview

Many agricultural economists declare soil and plant nutrition to be the number one return on investment in farming. Most plant physiologists, pathologists, and microbiologists believe that proper nutrition contributes more to plant structure, health, and disease resistance than any other factor. Meanwhile, soil scientists agree that balanced nutritional inputs speed decomposition of complex elements making them available for plants to metabolize. Therefore, nutrition plays a critical role in overall plant performance, yield, and profitability.

Plant Function

Plants function like factories. Roots anchor, assimilate, and transport available nutrients upward through the plant’s vascular system. Conversely, plant top structure acts like a tower fitted with solar collectors (leaves) positioned to absorb sunlight. Light energy then converts to chemical energy as photosynthetic pigments use water and CO2 and produce carbohydrates. Fruit, vegetable, nut, and other tissue type production…is a by-product of sunlight, water, nutrients, and necessary atmospheric gasses (i.e. oxygen, CO2) coming together through simultaneous decomposition, photosynthetic, and metabolic processes within and around the plant. Compromising or losing any one of these core building blocks (i.e. light, water, nutrients, atmospheric gasses, etc.) will either temporarily interrupt or halt the production process altogether.

As a wise old investment counselor once said, “one cannot spend the interest on money they never saved.” Robbing your plants of quality food will leave you holding an empty bag.

Nutrient Formulation

Maximizing plant performance and crop yields requires the use of easily decomposed, highly available, chemically pure elemental nutrient forms. Such ingredients cost more initially, but end up being less expensive when all plant growth, production, and fruit quality factors are considered. One cannot pull out a silk purse, when they began with a pig’s ear. Therefore, those committed to quality crop production must start with the best nutrient formulations available.

Over the years…I’ve learned that the people, plants, animals, thoughts, and values one feeds well do more to help in return.  Case-in-point…have you ever tried to get a 250 pound high school football player to listen at a meeting after being fed one measly Styrofoam bowl of warmed over oatmeal and cold toast?  Problem…his stomach is talking louder than the one speaking as he thinks only of food.  Sure…like he’s going to hear anything…yeah right!

Soil and plant nutrition travels a similar path in profitable commercial orchard production.  Nutrition equals food.  Living things must eat to thrive and produce.  Quality food means healthy tissue and structural strength adequate to perform its task with excellence.  Under-nourished plants do not perform well.  Instead; they lack internal energy, fall short at bloom. fail to grow fruit-bearing twigs, cannot protect their crop, shortchange next year’s buds, and rarely navigate extreme weather successfully.  Remedy?  Feed your soil and plants well!  You will be glad you did!

Tactical Approach / Plant - Soil Assessment

Accurate plant, soil, and water assessment result from keen observation, asking right questions, comprehensive testing, historical review, and applying effective solutions. Comprehensive plant and soil testing includes nutritional, compositional, physiological, and pathological screening. Many deficiencies, toxicities, pathogens, or other problem indicators are missed by cutting corners in the discovery process. Therefore, proper diagnostic testing must be conducted to attain useful test results and information.

Plant Assessment / Symptoms - vs - Causes

Outer tissues like leaves, stems, buds, twigs, bark, and other exterior components typically manifest “symptoms” caused by deeper issues occurring within the plant, soil, or environment. A certain group of symptomatic indicators reveal a specific “cause.” Far to often…professional plant analysts mistakenly treat symptoms, rather than causes. Treating symptoms perpetuates problems, while treating causes solves them. Accurate symptom assessment coupled with comprehensive testing will establish whether an issue or cause is nutritional, physiological, or pathogenic in nature.

Diagnostic Testing / Gathering Samples

Gathering quality samples, running on-target tests, and working with a qualified lab is critical your bottom line! General efforts reap general results. Refined specific efforts reap useable results. Remember…nutrition, disease, and remedy application cost money. Do yourself a favor by building your diagnostic process on a strong foundation. It will save you money and boost your success!

Plant Sample Introduction

Taking plant samples properly is determined by what you are looking for. First, be sure the diagnostic lab you have selected capable and known for being able to analyze or diagnose the crop or issues being looked for. Second, be sure to ask your lab how they prefer you collect, package, and deliver your samples to them. Below, please find basic sample gathering guidelines. Soil Nutrition

Soil nutrition represents your project’s long-term future foundation.  Why?  Because soil simply cannot be effectively amended after your crop is planted.  For instance…when planting a nursery, new orchard, vineyard, or for conservation…ongoing tree or plant presence prevents one from plowing, sub-soiling, ripping, or otherwise turning the soil for many years.  In annual crops, the same is true at a greatly reduced level due to shorter crop duration.

Maximum opportunity for soil revision, renovation, and restoration only exists prior to planting.  Another factor that requires the physical blending of your soil profile through ripping, plowing, disking, and rotovating…is the immobility of certain insoluble nutrient elements or metals.  Insoluble elements must be mechanically mixed with soil if necessary distribution within the profile is to occur.  More soluble elements can be incorporated with the soil through different irrigation or fertigation methods.  Therefore, it is most beneficial to make use of your pre-plant soil restoration opportunity.  Otherwise, you will find yourself spending a lot of money to fix what you cannot reach.

Plant nutrition represents your crops ability to germinate, grow, survive, produce, go dormant, and return to serve you again next year.  Look at it this way…if you want your kids to grow, get strong, flourish, and develop into healthy adults…you feed them well!  Plants are no different.  One would never think of starving their child, robbing them of clothes, withdrawing shelter, or casting them into the cold…and, still expect them to grow up normal.  Again, plants are the same.  You cannot ask a plant to do the impossible filled with nothing…it just does not work.

Application / Ground - Foliar

Application methods and product formulations greatly affect end result. Many people simply apply “X” amount of nitrogen via the cheapest form available without soil or tissue testing…and call it “good.” Other people take their samples, run tests, gather information, and apply target nutritional inputs to maximize their yields and profits. Either way…the often misunderstood issue of how, what, and when to apply fertilizer or nutrient products remains a mystery to most. Some would ask…why does it matter…fertilizer is fertilizer…right? Not so! Nutrient type, analysis, formulation, complexity, and solubility wander far and wide. Success demands application of the right product…the right way…at the right time if you want to win!

Fertilizer Formulation

Due to element insolubility, immobility, and complexity…many nutrients remain difficult for your plants to use. Based on “pre or post-plant” soil renovation method discussion on the preceding “soil nutrition” page…delivering nutrients into the root zone effectively is a task in itself. Then, comes the issue of complexity…triple super phosphate, di-ammonium phosphate, or mono-ammonium phosphate…will the real phosphate please stand up! Nutrient form complexity is more than triple, di, or mono forms. Complexity also refers to purity (i.e. base, chelated, sequestered, EDTA, or technical…for example). And, complexity goes on to involve solvents, carriers, penetrants, stickers, emulsifiers, and more. Nutrient complexity is rather…complex!

Product Quality

There is no free lunch! Quality costs and makes money. Inferiority pinches and wastes money. Quality product requires quality ingredients. Inferior products use inferior ingredients to rob you of beneficial results. One cannot expect to buy a premiere product or achieve extraordinary results for pennies on the dollar...realistically. If top notch results are promised from low grade products…it’s a lie!

We all know what it is like to have our doctor prescribe name brand medicine for best results only to receive “generic” at the pharmacy and suffer the consequences. Like medication…cheaper nutrient or chemical copies had to change or leave more costly ingredients out to lower price.

Question… Is saving money more important…or, succeeding? The choice is yours!
